Residential: How to Design HDMI Systems that Work
Dave Pedigo, CEDIA Senior Director of Technology, offered quick tips on successful HDMI distribution. Learn more in the CEDIA University course, Designing HDMI Distribution Systems That Work, at EHX 2012, Saturday, March 17 from 8:00am – 12:00pm (CEU value: 2).
1. Test Your HDMI System from the Start
“Although touted as one cable, one solution, taking HDMI beyond a simple single room, single source can get difficult quickly,” said Pedigo. “If an HDMI distribution system is not designed correctly, it can become very expensive to go back to troubleshoot and repair. So it is critical to design and test the system properly the first time.”
2. Avoid Getting In Over Your Head
“If an integrator doesn’t know what they are doing, it is very simple to get in over their head and design a system that does not work properly or even at all,” said Pedigo.
3. Learn from Real-Life Examples
“An example of designing a system that is destined to fail would be including a device that has multiple displays and only one key within the EDID,” said Pedigo. “Take simple steps during the design phase, including testing the source devices EDID with a proper test device.”
Access to CEDIA University courses and all training sessions is included when you register for the EHX Full Conference Pass.

Are Your Clients Protected?

Each week the industry experts at CompTIA will provide a glimpse into their educational conference sessions offered at EHX 2012. This week, Lien-Anh Van Wagener, Senior Director of Events & Education, takes a look at the Quick Start Session on IT Security, taking place Friday, March 16 from 10:00am - 11:00am at EHX.

1.  Why is it important for an integrator to understand IT Security?

“Organizations have to comply with both federal and state laws that protect sensitive data, and they have to be able to articulate the necessity of security solutions to their partners and clients. Security touches every business now, and those that deal with medical records, financial information, or legal documents are under the most scrutiny for security compliance and biggest risk for hacking.”

2. What’s new and exciting in your field of expertise?

“The Cloud and social media booms have catapulted security to the forefront. Securing virtual environments are not only necessary but also very challenging, so it’s important to do it right. Becoming a trusted advisor in security can ensure long-term success and growth for your company.”

3. What are the pitfalls if an integrator doesn’t fully know IT Security?

“If Security isn’t done correctly, it not only disrupts business as usual, but it can destroy your credibility, put innocent people at risk for identity theft, and open you up to a variety of lawsuits.”

4. Can you give a real life in the field scenario regarding IT Security?

“In April 2011, a large online entertainment company experienced an Internet security breach that robbed up to 77 million accounts of personal information and credit card numbers. It caused an outrage for customers around the world that trusted such a large, global company. Many customers were so fed up that they had no problem transferring to that company’s competitors. Regardless of how hard you try, it is very hard, if not impossible, to regain customer trust once it is compromised.”

5. Can you debunk any myths?

“Never think you have done enough. Hackers work 24/7, so you should have that kind of coverage for your business and for your customers as well.”

What’s Your Healthcare IT IQ?

Each week the industry experts at CompTIA will provide a glimpse into their educational conference sessions offered at EHX 2012. This week, Lien-Anh Van Wagener, Senior Director of Events & Education, takes a look at the Quick Start Session on Healthcare IT, taking place Thursday, March 15 from 3:00pm - 4:00pm at EHX.

1. What kinds of projects require this knowledge of HealthCare IT?

“The Heathcare IT space has specific terminology, workflow, and regulations that IT companies doing business in this space need to understand to be successful. Solution providers must prepare themselves to deal with a daunting regulatory environment, where millions in financial penalties await those who expose patient data. The market opportunity remains significant, but solution providers must appreciate the uniqueness of the opportunity, due in part to its highly regulated nature. CompTIA’s suite of Healthcare IT channel training provides guidance for navigating this market.”

2. What’s new and exciting in your field of expertise?

“The market opportunity in healthcare IT continues to be significant. There is a significant demand for health IT professionals with medical experience, says a new report from MedZilla.com. MedZilla estimates that 50,000 new health IT-related jobs have been created since the passage of the HITECH Act in 2009, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics recently projected that health IT jobs would increase by 20 percent annually through 2018, far above the average for any other occupation, reports Fierce HealthIT. Regulations are constantly changing in this space, and it’s important to keep abreast of the changes. Attend this session to hear about the latest regulations in HIT and what training and certifications are necessary to be successful.”

3. What are the pitfalls if an integrator doesn’t fully know Healthcare IT?

By not fully understanding the terminology, workflow, and regulations in the HIT market, a solution provider may experience unexpected barriers to entry and suffer potentially huge financial consequences.

4. Can you debunk any myths?

“Entering the HIT market is not as simple as it seems. Due to the regulatory landscape and unique terminology and workflow within the space, solution providers interested in this market need to do their research and have a solid foundation of the nuances to mitigate barriers to entry.”

5. Can you give a real life in the field scenario regarding Healthcare IT?

“The federal government is utilizing funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to incent physicians and hospitals to deploy Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems by 2015 for Medicare, with individual states defining reimbursement for Medicaid. ARRA had a $27.3 billion dollars provision titled Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH). Eligible providers, hospitals and critical access hospitals hoping to qualify for the funds must hit EHR deployment milestones. The largest payouts are for Medicare-eligible providers who receive the largest payments by meeting meaningful use objectives. Solution providers positioned in the healthcare field may soon find themselves investing heavily in technology to meet the demand. But those who want to cash in on the opportunity must deal with the intricacies and challenges of the healthcare field.”
